How to Get Through Wedding Photo Proofing Without It Taking a Week

Most wedding photographers deliver somewhere between 600 and 1,500 final images for a full day of coverage — roughly 100 per hour of shooting. If your photographer offers proofing (sending you the gallery so you can flag favorites for retouching or an album), you're looking at picking maybe 40-60 photos for a 20-page album out of hundreds or over a thousand. That gap is exactly where most couples get stuck.

A few things that actually help:

1. Go through the gallery separately first. Each person picks their own favorites alone, no discussing yet. Trying to agree on every photo in real time, one at a time, is what turns a 30-minute task into a multi-weekend project.

2. Only talk about where you disagree. Once you both have a list, the photos you both picked are done, the ones you both cut are done — the only conversation left is the (usually much shorter) list where your picks didn't match.

3. Handle burst shots as a group, not one by one. Photographers fire several frames of the same pose or moment. Comparing all six almost-identical shots individually is where a lot of the time actually goes — group them mentally (or with a tool that does it automatically) and just pick the best one from each cluster.
